Alternate Enforcement Program

< Back to glossary

The Alternative Enforcement Program (AEP) is a mechanism used by the New York City to identify residential buildings that are not properly maintained and ensure that violations and the conditions that caused the violations are corrected. Each year the City identifies the 200 most-distressed buildings for inclusion in the program (based on code violations received and emergency repair work needed), and gives the owners four months to make the necessary corrections. If an owner fails to meet this deadline, the building becomes subject to building-wide inspections and repairs conducted by the City, and billed to the owner.
