Submetering

< Back to glossary

Submetering is a process by which the supply of electricity comes into the building through a master meter and is treated as a single account from the perspective of the utility company. The energy bill is paid by the owner of the building, who then bills each tenant according to their respective share of the energy usage. The benefits of submetering include:

  • Lower costs. Since the energy usage of the building is bundled together into a single account, the tenants will receive the benefit of bulk rate pricing.
  • Pay only for what you use. Because each tenant pays only for the energy that they use, they are more aware of their usage patterns, and are more likely to reduce their usage.
